About the ImPACT Test

ImPACT™ is the most-widely used computerized concussion evaluation system.ImPACT™ stands for Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing.Developed in the early 1990's by Drs. Mark Lovell and Joseph Maroon, it was the first test of its kind. Currently it is the most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system.

The adult ImPACT™ test (for athletes ages 11 & up) is a 20-minute test that has become a standard tool used in comprehensive clinical management of concussions for athletes of all ages. The test consists of six individual sections as outlined below.

  •         Section I: Demographic Information & Health History
  •         Section II: Current Symptoms and Conditions
  •         Section III: Neuropsychological Tests
    • Module 1: Word Memory
    • Module 2: Design memory
    • Module 3: X's and O's
    • Module 4: Symbol Matching
    • Module 5: Color Match
    • Module 6: Three Letter Memory
  •         Section IV: Injury Description
  •         Section V: ImPACT™ Test Scores

Concussion management is inherently difficult. The best method of managing concussions is on an individualized basis using baseline testing and/or post-injury neuro-cognitive testing. If baseline testing is present, it can be used to objectively evaluate the injured athlete's post-concussion condition. It can provide a method of tracking the athlete's recovery therefore ensuring a safe return to play. Recently, an international panel of sports medicine experts has referred to neuro-coginitve testing as the "cornerstone" of concussion managament.

A Head of the Game administers ImPACT™ testing to athletes ages 11 & up. As mentioned above, the computer-based test takes about 20 minutes. The test measures multiple aspects of cognitive functioning in athletes, including:

  • Attention span
  • Working memory
  • Sustained and selective attention time
  • Response variability
  • Non-verbal problem solving
  • Reaction time

Results of the test are stored online and are made available in the event of an injury. A Head of the Game works closely with many Credentialed ImPACT Consultants (CICs) in Massachusetts. (CICs are ImPACT partners with the education, training, and experience that comes with the completion of the Credentialed ImPACT Consultant Program™.) Due to the fact that the ImPACT™ is internet based, A Head of the Game is able to furnish an athlete's baseline test data to any CIC upon request without geographic limitations. A list of CICs can be found on the ImPACT website or by clicking the FIND A DOCTOR link at the bottom of any page of this site.
